FIRE IN AUCKLAND

SERIOUS LOSS AVERTED.

AUCKLAND, This Day.

A brilliant piece of fire fighting was flono by the Auckland Fire Brigade early >this morning. A fire was discovered on the third floor of the Palmerston Buildings, at the corner of Quosn and Customs streets, shortly after half-past two. A prompt call to the brigade brought the fire fighters to the spot at a psychological moment. Three people in the top story were rescued, and the fire was confined to the corner of the story where it broko out, the loss being perhaps not much more than a tenth of what it would have been had Auckland possessed a less efficient brigade. The damage to indented' property was between £10,----000 and £12,000. Most of the goods were insured.
