LADIES' HOCKEY

INTER-ISLAND MATCH NARROW VICTORY POE THE SOUTH. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, 2nd Sept. At Bughy Park to-day, under ide.al weather conditions, a fast and interesting display of hockey was witnessed by a largo gathering, when the South Island ladies' representative, team defeated the North by 1 goal to nil. The fact that only two North Island teams were competing in the ladies' tourney made the Northern team far from ro-, presentative, but the splendid.combination of the Ruahine girls, nine of whom were in the team, compensated for the lack of players to choose from. The South Island team was individually superior to the North, but lacked cohesion, and were inclined to be selfish. Early in the first spell passing among Misses Clark, Melvin, and Keddel, South Island forwards, enabled the lastnamed to shoot. Mrs. Duncan cleared, but Miss Melvin stopped her shot and sent in a hot' one that gave the goalkeeper no chance. Thereafter 'both teams made frequent excursions into each other's territory, the play never for a moment being dull. Good defensive work prevented either team scoring, though often a goal seemed imminent. Territorially the South Island had a little the better of the play, but the difference was very slight. Just before tho call of time the Southern supporters cheered when they saw a hot shot from Miss Keddel apparently go into the net, but it had gone through from the side. The game ended with a hot North Island attack that failed to bear fruit. For the South Island, Misses Burt and Piner were good in the backs, while in the forwards Misses Clark and Melvin were the pick of five good individual players. Tor the North Island, Mrs. Brabazon was splendid at fullback, Misses Anderson and Bell were good at half, and Misses I. M'Dowell and "Wilkins were very good, the firstnamed displaying clever stick work. The Mille Memorial Cup final (100 yards lady hockey players' race) resulted: Miss G. Swinburne (Wellington), 1; Miss E. Simpson (Ruahine), 2; Miss R. M'Dowell (Ruahine), 3. To-day's tournament results were:— Wellington (3) heat Southland B (2), Eastern South A (5) beat South Canterbury (1); Otago (3) beat Eastern Southland B (0); Southland A (7) beat Canterbury (2). |
