AT FEILDING
'-'; SOME BIG DIVIDENDS ''£.;.;•, CAPTAIN GAZELEY WINS J.'-i-'V'.' HANDICAP.. .;-■-• (By; Telegraph, from "Vedette.") ;■ The .Marton Jockey Club's Meeting was ■concluded yesterday at Feilding in ideal weather, but the attendance showed a fall., ing ;off which was reflected in a decreased ' tdtalisator turnover of from £19,427 to £14,852. Tho total decrease on the meeting was ' £9742. Yesterday a succession of outsiders made matters bad for backers, and no doubt assisted in the general decrease. One sovereign invested on the winner of each race would have shown a return / of. £70 3s. There was an inquiry after the first race, which resulted in R. Miles, rider of Bissac, being suspended for one month for interference with Petal and Darktown. The track showed;little if any improvement as compared with the > first day, and no doubt some of the horses could not act on it as well as they will do, for instance, at/Wanganui. Whether the track alone will .a.jresponsible for a change of form is quite -another matter. • Lady Desmond proved herself a decided nuisance at the barrier at the start of the Telegraph Handicap. While thus early in the.year some consideration must be shown to young horses, it is submitted that it is unnecessary to send the remainder ' of. the field back to escort the unruly one. In addition, a snap start when walking up, while it has no educative!value for such as Lady Desmond, is not'fair to the owners of other horses, ancUthe Limond filly is not likely always to>K'ave such a concession. Mr. C. O'Connor cannot be commended for the leniency he showed with' Lady Desmond any more than" that he gave to Commendation at Bulls. Unruliness should not be permitted' to become the means of gaining an advantage which would not be possible in a compulsory flat-footed start. NOVICE STAKES. Schorr was an odds-on favourite, with Petal second in demand. Takaroa was the first to show out, but Schorr soon took charge from Alloway, Bissac, Propeller, and Whititaua, with Royal Time many lengths away, last. Alloway was in front crossing the top from Whititaua, Schorr, Dominion Rose, Takaroa, and All Bright. Whititaua and Alloway led into the straight from Schorr and Royal Time. Alloway, very confidently ridden, held off Schorr-with ease, and beat him "home by half a length. Royal Time was three lengths-away third, and Whititaua, Takaroa, and Dominion Rose next. The winner, a three-year-old gelding by Limond from Admyra, literally walked in. Schorr was being hard ridden to reach him, but Alloway was going very easily to hold hini off. He is yet very green, and on the first day missed the jump out, and tailed the field. Schorr improved in rather marked fashion, but Royal Time put up a remarkable performance:. With one furlong covered he must have been 75 yards' behind the leaders, yet' was up with them at the turn. Naturally he weakened again at the end, but with an eaven start it looked as if he. iwolild have been very hard to beat. Whi-' titaua, a fine big gelding by King Soult from a San Fran mare, looks a likely sort for a jumper later on. SECOND HACK HURDLES. Rangisarto was favourite with Mokioi leoond choice nearly as well backed, then big drop coming Revel and Gaunt•l._t.";/ Diamond Ring, Arrow River, Axle, •and-Hokioi led to the first fence, and at ih;e. second Diamond Ring hit hard and ; dropped, right back. Racing out of the "straight, Axle and Arrow River just led ..Rangisarto and Hokioi with Gauntlet head..ing.the others. Revel made a forward ,jmove -in the back straight, and racing to '"toeturn Axle and Hokioi just led Rangisarto and Arch Salute, with Revel next. Hokioi joined Rangisarto at the last fence, 'which Rangisarto jumped best, and he beat Hi.kioi' horn« by, four lengths. Arch SaJuto was a length away third, and Revel fourth; Axle and Gauntlet were next. Rangisarto was always nicely placed, and >_ie had too much pull in condition for the ,'rest. .In addition, he had the advantage' '■•of A;. M'Donald's horsemanship. Arch "Salute?arid Revel both were more promin-l-eht at.the end than at any other stage, 'and Arch Salute may make a useful hurd">._e__ Hokioi jumped carefully, and this Was evident at the fence which brought "Mm down on the first day, and which was incidentally, the last tobe jumped. Gaunt- ; let put .no heart into «s work at all. Axle and Arrow River both faded out at the ..r«nd.*; '.*■■■ :-J-WAIROMA HACK HANDICAP. - * Gay Comet was a much better favourite than Royal Land, with a fair amount of Imapoct for Hypnotic and tb« Trenthara
trained Royal Game a rank outsider. Royal Game was the leader down the back from Gay Comet, Hymill, Royal Land, and Hypnotic. Gay Comet lost his place half a mile from home, where Royal Game was still showing the way to Royal Land, Hymill, Gay Comet, and Empire Camp. Royal Game held his own to the end and beat Royal Land by two lengths, with Hymill a similar distance away third. Gay Comet and Hypnotic were next. Royal Game has always showed a fair amount of pace, but this was his most successfu effort. Royal Land ran a useful race, but Hymill will be improved. Gay Comet ran a puzzling race, for again he showed up m the middle stages, only to come again in the straight. He might do better on a dry track. HEATON PARK HANDICAP. Euphonium was always favourite and ended up with 180 more tickets on him than on Olympic, who was sliglttly better backed than Gold Jacket and Alaric The winner and runner-up, Captain Gazeley and lame Fox, were at royal prices. Miss liupana led down the straight rrom Olympic, Kilfaire, Euphonium, and Novar. Alaric got a clear run through at the turn oufc;.of the straight and sis furlbngs from home Miss Hupana led from Olympic, Kilfaire, Tame Fox, Alaric, and Gold Jacket, -or the nest twp furlongs the field kept up a continual change of position's, but racing for the turn Tame Fox, Olympic, and Captain Gazeley had settled down in front with Gurnin, Alaric, Kilfare, and Euphonium hard on their heels. Captain Gazeley and Tame Fox maintained their positions and in the end Captain Gazeley beat Tame Fox by a length. Kilfare was a head away third, with Euphonium fourth and Olympic, Novar, and Alaric next. The race was an excellent one, and with half a mile to go the whole eleven runners were going well, and anything had a chance. Captain Gazeley with his light weight, stayed on too well for the betterfancied brigade, and beat the rejuvenated Tame Fox, who also ran a great race. Kilfaire "was a little unlucky,, as he appeared to be interfered with, yet was finishing on at a great rate. Euphonium had to cover a little extra ground round the turn, but it is doubtful if he would have won. Novar should strip a better horse next time out. Alaric received an interrupted passage, but did not put much heart into his finishing effort. Olympic was. always in a good position, and was not good enough. HACK STEEPLECHASE. Santiago was favourite; with Woden second choice and the winner the outsider. Woden led Labour Morn, with Uncle Dave and Santiago last, this being the order for a mile. Labour Morn jumped to the front at the stand double the next time, and although Santiago and Uncle Dave both tried to catch him, he went on to win by four lengths from Santiago, with Uncle Dave another eight lengths away. AJi four gave a good exhibition of jumping over the brushed hurdles, which sonstituted the steeplechase course. LADIES' BRACELET. Koauau was at a short price, but justified it by winning in spite of plenty of bad luck. Mountain Jean, Birthmark, and Brigadier Bill were fairly, well backed. Birthmark led down the straight, from Mount Clyde, Brigadier Bill, and Jackaroo, with Koauau nearly last. Mount Clyde still led down the back from Birthmark, Atene, Jackaroo, Brigadier Bill, and Ayun Kara. Crossing the top Ayun Kara, Birthmark, and Mount Clyde were on terms clear of Arch Salute, Mountain Jean, and Koauau. Koauau kept up a strong run and was practically the first to turn for home. He went on to win by six lengths from Birthmark, who just lasted long enough to beat Ayun Kara by half a head. Mountain Jean was fourth, with Brigadier Bill, Mount Clyde, and Arch Salute next. Koauau, with Mr. J. Morris up, was at a liberal price considering the -.-ay he followed Elysianor nearly all the way on the first day. He was nearly down six furlongs from home, but once clear easily beat the opposition. Ayun Kara should have beaten Birthmark for second place. Mountain Jean went another fair race. Brigadier Bill failed to.show any real dash under his big load. He has not.done well lately. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP. Mireusonta carried practically half the total investments, anything else being at a good price in a one-dividend field. After delaying the start for a long time, Lady Desmond began! best, but Mireusonta was up with her in a flash, and the pair led Black Cat and Bonideer, with Beaumont tailed, off. So they raced to the turn, where Beaumont had,run up handy, but very wide out. Beaumont kept up his run, and Lady Desmond shook off Mireusonta. Lads' Desmond fought out every inch, but the more seasoned Beaumont gradually drew past and beat her home by a length. Black Cat was two lengths away third, and Bonideer fourth. Beaumont appeared to be in a hopeless position with half a mile to go, but he finished full of running. I^ady-Desmond was very wayward, both in her preliminary and at the barrier, and she delayed the start for several minutes. Finally, Mr. O'Connor sent them all back, and in a walking-up start the filly got away best. Unless she settles down her chances in future races will be prejudiced by her antics at the barrier. This is to be regretted, for she showed by the way she raced Mireusonta to a standstill that she is a high-class filly. She then went on and battled out the finish with Beaumont. Black Cat was always in the picture and finished on well. She should win a race on the trip. Bonideer was a little out of her class. FAREWELL HACK HANDICAP. Rahepoto was a good favourite, with Mister Gamp and Hynanna equally backed and Elysianor at a liberal price. Hathor and Inner Harbour began best and led into the back straight from Elysianor, Hynanna, Strongholt, Plane Pearl, and Rahepoto. Hathor and Inner Harbour still led racing for the turn, with Hynanna, Elysianor, Panart, and Joyeuse close up and Rahepoto and Plane Pearl clsoing up. Elysianor drew out at the distance, and then Hynanna, Plane Pearl, Hathor, and Rahepoto joined in. In a great finish Elysianor ridden out won by half a length from Rahepoto, with Plane Pearl, Hynanna, and Hathor almost in line, and Mister Gamp and Inner Harbour right up. Elysianor, always well placed, just lasted long enough, for had Rahepoto got clear a little earlier it looked as if he would have won. Plane Pearl and Hynanna both finished well, and Hynanna's winning turn is not far away, pinner Harbour and Hathor just failed to stay, but they were ridden against each other most of the way. Plane Pearl was decidedly unlucky not to gain third money. Results :— Novice Stakes, of 110 soys; weight 8.7; six furlongs.—9 Alloway (B. 11. Morris), 1; l Schorr, 2; 3 Royal Time, 3.
