ACCOUNTANTS' DEBATE

WELLINGTON STUDENTS SUCCESSFUL. There was a large and representative attendance at tho Accountants' Chambers on Friday evening, when tho tenth annual debate between the Christchurch and "Wellington Accountant Students' Societies took place. Mr. F. H. Bass (vice-president of the "Wellington Society) was in the chair, and extended a welcome to the visitors, who were present by special invitation. The subject for debate was "That it is in the best interests of tho Dominion that further encouragement be accorded to our secondary industries by means of increased protective duties." Messrs. C. G. Pickett (leader), H. Tyman, and J. Logic represented the Christchurch Society, who took the affirmative in debate, and Messrs. E. R. Norman (leader), P. H. Harris, and L. O. Atkinson, the "Wellington Society, supporting the negative. The debate was very evenly contested, and after a full and interesting discussion, in which the arguments on both sides were well advanced, the judge, Mr. 0. C. Mazengarb, M.A., LL.M., declared the "Wellington Society the winners 'by the narrow margin of three points. The judge, in complimenting the •speakers, stated that the debate had been of a very high standard, and the speeches had been of outstanding merit. At the conclusion of, the meeting, the chairman handed the Debating Shield to Mr. Norman, of tho Wellington Society, stating that tho shield had now boon won by the Wellington Society soven times, and by the Christchurch Society on three occasions. A hearty voto of thanks was accorded to Mr. Mazengarb for judging tho debate, and also for,,tho constructive criticism ho had passed on the debate and the respective speakers.
