FALSE PRETENCES

RECENT ARRIVAL IN TROUBLE. When Annie Wilson Malone, a domestic aged 25, a recent arrival from Home, found her funds rather low, sho obtained three sums of money, totalling £12, from Caroline Spurrier, by means of false pretences. On the first occasion, she said her father had died in England, and had left her £2500, and on the other two occasions, that she had money in tho Palmerston North Post Office. She admitted these facts in the Magistrate's Court this morning. Chief-Detective Ward stated that Malone arrived in New Zealand a few months ago, and had obtained the money because she was in straitoned circumstances. She was now in good employment, and, so far as he knew, nothing else was known against her. Sh« had not yet made restitution. Mr. W. G. Riddoll, S.M., remanded the accused for sentence till next Wednesday, ponding the report of the JTemalc Probation Officer (Mrs. Glover). She was allowed bail on her own recognisance of £10.
