PREFERENCE TO ENGLAND

BEQUEST TO SUB-LET CONTEACT BEFUSED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Ist September. A statement has been made that although an English tender to supply cable was accepted by the Auckland Electric Power Board in preference to a German one, which was £4000.cheaper, t^e English firm has requested the board to permit it to supply German cable in order to fulfil the contract. This statement was referred to the general manager, Mr. B. H. Bartley. He said that the English firm has aske& that, owing, to a breakdown in its vulcanising plant^ it should be peimitted to sub-let the contract to a firm named Gaiepel. There seemed little doubt that this firm was of foreign origin, but there was also no doubt that to-day it was an all-British concern with its works in Britain. Its product could, therefore, not be called German cable. Nevertheless, the board had refused to permit tho English firm to .sub-let the contract to Gaiepel's, and its London agents had been notified accordingly.
