CAR SKIDS OVER PRECIPICE

OCCUPANTS SERIOUSLY INJURED,

TAIHAPE, This Day.

A sensational accident occurred on the Rangiwahia road, four miles from Mangaweka, at 5 p.m. yesterday. A motor-car driven by Constable Grant, containing Mrs. Grant and George M'Donald, skidded through the road railings, and went over the side of the gorge, a sheer drop of two hundred feet. The occupants were pinned under the car in water for two hours before their plight was discovered by a passing lorry driver.

The rescue party had to cue a path through the bush to reach the car, which was chopped to pieces in order that the occupants might be released. They were hauled up a newly-cut path in stretchers by means' of a rope of two hundred yards.

Dr. Davis, a lady doctor, rendered wonderful service to tho injured, who were taken by the ambulance to tho Taihape Hospital, twenty-two miles away.

M'Donald (Was injured in the head and shoulders and had to be operated on. His condition is very critical. Constable Grant suffered serious injuries to his head and legs, but there is prospect of his recovery:. Mrs. Grant was injured on the legs and back. She is semi-conscious, and concussion is feared.

It took four hours to effect a rescue in the rain and pitch darkness. The escape from being dashed to pieces was a miracle.
