PETONE SITTING.

The fortnightly sitting of Ihc Petono Magistrate's Court was held yesterday, before Messrs. E. W. Short and Thomas Potts, J.P.'s.

For not having the proper number plates on his motor-car, William E. Eiffe was fined 20s and 7s costs. Claude B. Miles, for using an unlicensed motor-ear, was fined 20s and costs.

Penalties as wider were inflicted against persons who had exceeded the speed limit in motor-cars: —G. A. Blundell, P. G. F. Johnston, R. S. Johnston, R. S. Menzies, J. O'Brien, H. R. Peacock, D. Ritchie, D. Tonkin, and A. G. Reid, each £2 and costs; G. C. Niold, £3 and 7s costs; A. "VV. Blair and B. B. Smith, each £1 and .7s costs; J. F. Amos, W. R. Carter, A. .. Dawson, R. J. C. Just, A. W. M'Coll, Jeannie L. Norton, and H. 1). Tonks, each 10s and 7s costs; J. W. Cudby, costs only, 7s.

Judgment for plaintiffs by default, with costs, was given in following undefended civil cases:—W. L. Jencss v. A. Davenport, 12s 6d; A. S. Kent v. E. P. Anderson, 17s 7d; Estate F. G. Reid v. H. W. Gardiner, costs only, 12s; Estato F. G. Reid v. F. R. Hebley, £10 18s Od; Jeannie Wilson v. S. G. Alsop, £6; White and Sullivan v. P. O'Hallor.-in, £3 15s; B. J. Dudley v. Leo. S. Sharpe, £4 14s.

An oak wljich was recently cut down at Wingorworth Hall, in Derbyshire, measured 18ft round the butt, mid is said locally to be thousands of years old. Its wood is being used in the building of the Bakewell church.
