SYDNEY WOOL SALES.
The news that the Sydney wool sales opened with an advance is encouraging, though they do not necessarily set' the- standard for New Zealand. The wool position in the different States of Australia varies. In New South Wales a bumper clip is considered certain. Remarkable wool-cutting figures are coming to hand. This year's weather conditions were better than last year's, when drought reigned over the north-west, some of this State's best wool lands. This year the effects have been blotted out by one of the most prolific seasons the State has ever known. It is expected that the average yield per sheep will be equal to, if not greater than, last year's, and this, year the Bheep number 42,000,000, an increase of 5,000,000 compared with last year. Several large stations are averaging up to 141b of wool per sheep. The New South Wales increase, it is considered, will more than offset the effects of the severe drought in Queensland, where between 0,000,000 and 7,000,000 • sheep have died, and the weight of fleece of survivors has been reduced. it is expected that the Queensland clip will be 100,000 bales less than last year. The returns in Victoria are expected to vary, according to the weather conditions during the year in the various districts, but taken all round figures are expected to be equal to last year, when 502,000 bales were delivered to stores.
