LATE SPORTING
A GREAT PERFORMANCE
LIMERICK'S WIN AT BOSEHILL.
"A great performance" was the general summing-up of Limerick's win with 111b over weight-for-age in the Carlingford Mile at Rosehill, writes "Pilot" in the Sydney "Referee." It pleasantlysurprised his trainer, F. D. Jones. He was of opinion that if Limerick happened to bo fairly placed after going half a mile he would have a good winning chance, but it did not enter into his calculations that Limerick would bo one of the leaders from the start.
The gelding outstayed Quan Tart after tho latter appearod to have taken his measure inside the final hundred yards. With further to travel, Limerick would have scored more decisively, as ho was going away from the chestnut at the winning-post. It has been claimed for Limerick by his New Zealand admirers that he is nothing if not a stayer,- and it is certain that he is going to be a formidable Derby opponent for Bampion. They will first meet in the Hobartville Stakes, and, if the New Zealand gelding is as well suited by "the Farm" as by Bosehill, ho is sure to givo a good account of himself, even at seven furlongs. After Limerick's success, Jones did not think Battlement could be beaten in the first division of the Maiden Handicap. Track form justified that opinion. The previous Thursday Battlement was doing quite as well as Limerick at the finish of a fast-run seven furlongs, and yet, while the latter won his race, the former only beat a couple of runners in his. He met with interference at an early stage, but could not raise a decent gallop even when he was subsequently afforded the opportunity. This was difficult to understand, but the cause was apparent wKen he returned to the weighing-yard. One of his forelegs was bleeding where he had struck himself. Whatever his trainer may have won on Limerick I fancy h» dropped the greater portion on Battle ment.
