DEFINITION OF AN AMATEUR

ABE AUSTRALIANS PROFESSIONALS?

(BI TELEGRAPH MESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, 29th Jan. What is an amateur in cricket? was a query received from Mr. Douglas Hay. an ex-New Zealand representative, at the meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council. Mr. Hay said he was interested in a body which was granting leases to amateur bodies, and it was desired to insert a clause embodying the definition of an amateur as accepted by the leading amateur bodies in New Zealand. The secretary of the council replied as follows :—"I would inform you thatso far as New Zealand cricket is concerned, my council recognises an amateur as one who does not receive remuneration other than that paid as compensation for loss of wages and actual travelling expenses." "Well, at that-rate, the Australians are professionals," said the chairman (Mr. J. S. Barrett).
