ATTEMPT TO EVADE CUSTODY

On charges of vagrancy and tres- ' passing on the racecourse, two young ' men, Stanley George Gibb and Arthur Paul Paulsen, wsre arrested .at Trentham yesterday by Detectives Walker ' and Sinclair. The latter officer undertook to escort both accused into town, „ and the party accordingly entrained for Wellington. When Lambton Station Was reached, Paulsen, a small but sturdily built many-jumped for the door and jammed the pursuing detective in.,.the platform gate by, closing it as he left the carriage steps. He quickly dodged ' j about among the crowd, but Detective I I Sinclair was close at his heels and caught him at the end of the station plati form. In the meantime the other man had been watched by Constables Bonnington and Henry, and both accused were taken to the lock-up. They appeared before Mr. ,E. Pago, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court to-day, and were remanded,until next Friday. Bail was opposed by the police, and was refused by the Court. "Both men are wellknown to us," declared Senior-Detective Cameron. .
