The driver, Kennard, was thrown clear and only badly shaken. The horse, also uninjured, bolted with the shafts, the vehicle .being smashed to matchwood. The engine driver whistled, but was not Heard by Kennard, on. account of the pounding surf on the beach nearby and the southerly Pieces of the vehicle were picked up over fifty yards away. The driver had a marvellous escape from death ' :
