GALLIPOLI GRAVES

ANGOBA LIFTS QUARRYING BAN.

(UNITED FBBSS ASSOCIATION.—COPTEIGHT.)

CPtfiUBHBD IN IBS TIMBS.) (Received 23rd January, 11 a.m.) LONDON, 22nd January. The Constantinople correspondent of " The Times " says that the Angora Government has cancelled the quqrrying ban. ' .

On 15th January, it was announced by' the Constantinople correspondent of " The _ Times " that the work of the Imperial War Graves GimmiEsion on GaJilipoli had been paralysed by the Turks, who had suspended further quarrying at Ungardere. The blame for this action was put on the authorities ac Angora, who, it was alleged, thought that the handful of. men employed were not solely engaged»on the work of the cemeteries, but were also left behind for military purposes. This unjustifiable_ conduct of the Turks came at a particularly unfortunate moment. Owing to recent severe storms, damage estimated at £5000 was done to quays and other establishments, and it was estimated that the work of the cemeteries would thereby be thrown back two months. It was calculated that if the workmen had not been hindered, the necessary stone could have been quarried by the end of March. Even so, hope of the completion of the Imperial Memorial at Cape Helles by Anzac Day has now been abandoned,, since threequarters of the memorial remains to be built. _. The Außtralian Memorial at Lone rme is only half finished.
