AUSTRALIAN MINES

GENERAL STRIKE MAY COME

COLLIERS DEMAND 1919 LOG.

(TOITSD PRSSS ASSOCIATION.—COPIRIOHT.)

SYDNEY, 22nd January. The Coalininers' Federation/ is placing before the, proprietors almost immediately a demand for a complete operation of the 1919' log, which includes a six-hour day, bank to bank, and a five-day week.

It is stated that, unless the proprietors agree to all the demands, there is every possibility of a general strike by coalminers , throughout Australia in February. The Central Council of the Miners' Federation recently submitted to the whole of the districts in question that in the event of the 1919 log being rejected by the 'proprietors, a ballot among the entire membership should be taken forthwith upon a motion for a general strike.

The proposal for a general strike ballot has been endorsed by a big majority, and when the Central Council meets next week it will make arrangements, both for^the submission of the log and the taking of . the general strike ballot, should 'the .latter' be .'necessary..
