THE HOLIDAY
BIG CROWDS, PERFECT CONDITIONS
CITY'S EIGHTY-FOURTH
BIRTHDAY.
To-day is the 84th anniversary of the founding of Wellington, and the holiday is being celebrated under perfect conditions. This is a marked change from what is very often the case, for Anniversary Day in Wellington has frequently been marred by a boisterous north-westerly wind. ■ In the early days the Port Nicholson regatta, was the event of importance on Anniversary Day. The '"regatta is still a big attraction, but there are others, including races at Trentham and sports and other recreations at the seaside resorts. To-day's ideal weather tempted a record crowd to Trentham, and many thousands also made the journey across the harbour, while others patronised Plimmerton and other spots on the Manawatu line in good numbers. Up to the time of going to press, however, estimates of the number of railway and ferry passengers were not available. The steamer Maori left Wellington at 8.10 a.m. on an excursion "to Picton, and she carried over 600 people across Cook Strait. ■
Wellington's Welcome Week has been inaugurated with every Buccess, and there are plenty of attractions for today. There is plenty of entertainment at Newtown Park to-day, and the gaiety there will be continued this evening. Besides the Williamson Comedy Company at the Opera House, Fullers' Vaudeville at His Majesty's, there is Wirth's Circus at Cable street.
