DISCUSSION OF REMAND.
(81 IELEGRAI-H —SPECIAL TO THE POET.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The accused in the alleged ringingin cases were before the Police Court today. Mr. Payno, for one of the defendants, said that he did not object to the remand to Christchurch, as it would ba far more convenient for the defendants and would save expenses in coming to Dunedin. He did not object to a reasonable remand, but he did object to a remand that would take the case over the Supreme Court sittings 0:1 12th February. He wished to notify the police of that fact, as if it was not observed ho might take steps to compel tlie police to go on with the case. ,■ The Magistrate said that a remand to Uinstchurch would be in the interests of the defendants. Mr. Hanl6h,'for the other defendants, said he did not object to a remand to Uinstchurch as long as it was clearly understood that the final remand would bo to Dunedin. The case should be gone on with, as he objected to the defendants being remanded for two or three weeks to enable the police to ■work up the case: Detective Beer said there would bo no unnecessary delay so far as the police were concerned. The Magistrate said he would grant the remand to Christchurch, bail being allowed as before. Detective Beer said there was every .indication that the case would tako two days, so he would like the Court to arrange a date for the remand to Dunedin bo as to .get the case off in the week. The Magistrate said he would try and arrange it so that the remand would bo to Dunedin on Thursday, 31st January. ■, ...
