LAWN TENNIS

MASTERTON TOURNAMENT

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

SATUEDAY'S PLAY DESCKIBED.

(BT TELEGRAPH.) (From our own reporter.) MASTERTON, Monday. The elimination process continued in the provincial tennis championships here to-day. The weather was again 'perfect, and the greens appear to possess a monopoly of green grass in the Wairarapa. The tournament is scheduled to be completed to-morrow, but the number of entries is so large that in spite of the courts being kept continuously occupied, it is probable that the finals will

not be completed till Wednesday. Today provided few outstanding matches, the seeded and other leading players in most cases finding no difficulty in keeping their places. The seedin" of the [draw was used in the tournament, but was not earned out according to the method officially sanctioned by the New Zealand Association. . The procedure to-day has been to force the A B grade events through, the championship -events ■ • n?! ly h *™S brought on in very bad light. _ This matter of holding up championship events—it is primarily a championship tournament—wfll probably result m inquiry at a later stage. The presence of Peach, Goodman, and Pike, of the New South Wales team is adding interest to the play. One of the most entertaining matches of the day was a.handicap event in which Peach and lfa Wellwood conceded 20 poin^ to Mr- and Mrs. J. Martin. The crackpair drew level at 49 points, but only scored three more before^their opponents went out. The Martins took thHame ISLa* 1™* I*'1 *' and Ul- Martini f£ve proved a very upsetting factor. The match concluded in hearty laughter gc^'ralfe 6 gMle Pr°dllCed *>»»

The scorea ln the, match between Mrs. Parkinson, who is second lady at Petone, against'Miss'Feast, did pot indicate what a hard fight it was. Mrs. Parkanson won 6-3, 6-1, but she got a fright, the youthful player playing a fine, sijeady game, and the match was a very-long one. ' ; Many of the games went to long deuces. Local interest was excited in the* handicap match Gawith and-Mrs. Melody against Piko and Miss Payton. The latter pair had to concede 8 points, and'this lead was maintamed by Gawith- and Mrs. Melody till the score was 38-28, in. their favour. Oswrth is a fine doubles player, and his partner is, of coarse, amongst the leading JNew Zealand ladies, and Pike (New South Wales) and his partner could not impress them., With the scores at the stage mentioned Gawith and his partner took twelve points in a row, combining very well and making no mistakes. Miss Payton was not playing up to championship form. Gawith and Mrs. Melody finally won 60-35. - '

The spectators were treated to a splendid exhibition when Wallace and r^ckie met Roydhouse and Hutchison. The former are probably one of the best doubles combinations iv the history of New Zealand tennis, and their frequent matches together have enabled them to •develop good methods. There was'little* between the pairs to-day. The losers led through most of the first set to 5-4, but the other pair then took three games and the set. In the second set %M all the way, to win the match 6-4. Both sides combined well, and the play at the service line was splendid. , Two well-known Wellingtonians, Salmond and Wilson, provided a first-class match to decide who should °- 0 to the semirfinals in the men's singles championship. Wilson had earlier defeated Dickie in a splendid match. There was no suggestion of Salmond-Wilson playing Backlme driving games; on the contrary both played to make openings at the net, and both placed well and played slashing low drives. They were both upset by slipping on the' dry grass, on the court. Wilson went more to the net, and played a fine volleying game, but Salmond's placin»- was frequently too good, his cross-court shots beating Wilson at the net. Wilson several times opened a good position, and then dropped what should have been his winning, shot. The second set was a hard fight in a bad light, Both were tiring alter a hard clay, and the game developed to a backline driving contest. Wilson led 4-3 then 5-4. Salmond then won the next three games, fighting hard One of the best battles of the day was Miss Y. Wellwood and' Mrs M Master, the former being one of the seeded players. Mrs. M'Master is.better known as Miss Doris Feuwick who represented New Zealand as emergency against New South Wales last yearMiss Wellwood took, the first set M ™ k n" VI"g.
