Several thousands of these fanatics already have defied the Government, and more threaten to join the movement. The islands of Samarkand Leyte also are infected, and -there are fears of a general uprising. ,-■-.■ The leaders have circulated the legend that Rizals has risen to life, and is about to assume a general dictatorship of the Philippines. Thousands of superstitious peasantry freely credit the story. The commander of the constabulary forces' at Surigao is suspending offensive operations, pending efforts of the authorities to devise a peaceful solution of the troubles. A gunboat ia held in readiness in the disaffected area, to assist the land forces in >tha event of emergency.
