DISCOVERED IN SOMERSET
BRITAIN INDEPENDENT OF
FOREIGN OILS.
(SYDNEY SUN CABLE.)
(UNITED PRBSS ASSOCIATION—COI-YRIGHT.)
LONDON, 19th January. The "Daily "Mail" states that Doctor Forbes Leslie, the oil expert, lecturing at Bridgwater, predicted that the Watchet mining engineer's accidental discovery of oil shales extending from Watchet to Combwich, would ensure Britain's independence of foreign oils in war time.
He estimated that there were nine thousand million tons of shales beds, the thickest in the world. This meant that Britain could supply her own cheap power, light, and heat for centuries, and would shortly produce petrol and lubricating oils on a big scale.
