OTAGO'S GOOD REPLY

PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH

WORKER TOPS THE CENTURY.

DUNEDIN, 19th January. The Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Otago was continued today under ideal conditions.

Wellington were dismissed before luncheon for 560, nine less than their total against Auckland, and the fourth highest score for one innings in the history of Shield matches.

Otago made a splendid start, and played fine cricket. It was not quite as sound as that of their opponents, and more risks were taken in running between the wickets.

There was a big crowd at Carisbrook when play began. Collins continued to bat well on resuming, and was well on his way to a century when Blamires clean bowled him. Ho had scored his N 85 in 100 minutes by good, clean strokes and gave no chances to the field. M'Girr, on the other hand, gave three chances, reaching the century, one at 100, another at 103. The one at 100, off Douglas, was missed by Shepherd at mid-off, and the other off Dickinson by Douglas in the slips. 506—6—85.

Henderson joined M'Girr, to Tie dismissed l.b.w. by Dickinson without scoring. 507—7—0. Then James came in, and batted freely, adding, a good offdrive through Shepherd's legs. He treated Dickinson with scant respect. M'Girr played on with dash until he played inside a ball from A. Alloo, and went but 551—8—117. M'Girr had put on his runs in 140 minutes. Douglas took the ball from Dickinson, and James succumbed to. temptation, letting out at a breaking ball, which clean bowled him, after a bright innings. 553—9—27. A single to Brice brought the score to 559—the total against Auckland. A. Alloo then got_ White's wicket. 560—10—1. The innings had lasted, roughly, seven houre. OTAGO AT THE WICKETS. ' Worker and Shepherd opened Otago's innings, Brice and M'Girr bowling. Both played neat cricket, and 50 went up for 30 minutes. The batsmen ran for short hits and gave a display of liveliness that was gratifying after Wellington's canny but profitable effort. Worker gave a chance to James at 8, and Shepherd gave chances to James and Henderson at .50, and had previously j given one to James. A four to Worker brought 100 up for 55 minutes, and the pair continued to put on runs merrily, driving more frequently than their opponents. One hundred and fifty were compiled in 70 minutes. Then Shepherd hit Watson high to Collins at point. Shepherd batted in agressive style, and played the cricket favoured by the public. He got his runs in 76 minutes—an indication of the difference between the rate of his and his opponents' scoring. M'Mullan joined Worker, and the scoring slowed, the incomer disliking the fast howling. At 83 Worker gave a chance to AVatson at point, but a fast low ball was dropped. Two hundred were made in 120 minutes, and two minutes later came the adjournment. M'Mullan scored faster after the adjournment, and brought his total to 55 for as many minutes. Worker being 96. Then Henderson sent down a full toss and j broke M'Mullan's middle pin. 249—2— i 56. " I Blamires joined' Worker, who brought his century up with nn off drive to the boundary, after being 170 minutes at the wickets. The' total for the team was then 250. With the score at 277 Dempster threw in well, and James .whipped off Worker's bails, and tfie liitlcr was given out. 277—3—106. A. .Alloo and Bkmiros kept the score niomrtirte. took it. Two balls later Collins bowled Al' oo- 297-4-7. H. C. Alloo was next, and 300 went up. At seven the incomer cut a ball which struck Kortlang, at second slip, on the knee—a lucky escape. M'Gii-r took the ball from Collins, and with his third ball skittled Blamires's sticks. 322—5-^lO. Duncan r7 aS*?i eXt ' and lost his Partner when H. %■ T A/ lo° miss-hit Collins into the hands of Hiddleston at slip. 334—6—16. With the second last ball of the last over of the day, Duncan went out to M'Girr alter a feeble display. Scores: WELLINGTON. First Innings. Hiddleston, Ibw, b Dickinson ...... 18 Baker, b A.
