PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
FIRST DAY'S PLAY
GOOD FORM AND KEEN CONTESTS.
The weather was perfect at'Masterton on Saturday when the twenty-first annual' Wellington Provincial Championship and Handicap Lawn Tennis Tournament, with which is incorporated the twenty-sixth annual Wairarapa championship and handicap tourney, opened on the Masterton Club's courts. Competitors were from as far north as Auckland, and as far south as Dunedin, and three New South Wales players—Peach, Goodman, and Pike—also took part. The courts were in excellent condition, tpue and fast, the visitors especially expressing their praise of the splendid surface, and the manner in which the courts had been handled and prepared for the tournament. There are about 170 individual players and 500 entries, a slight decrease over - the figures for last year, when there were 210 individual playert and 576 entries. In the men's championship singles the seeded players are N. B. Barkman, K. J. Walker, W. M.. Pike, M: L? Lampe, R. J. Goodman, S. Powdrell, E. D. Andrews, A. G. Wallace, E. Salmond, and F. Peach. In the ladies' championship singles, Miss J. M'Laren,1 Mrs. W. J. Melody, Miss M. Macfarlane, Miss Z. Welhvood, Miss M. Payton, and Miss A. Howe are the seeded players.
Play commenced at 8.30, but most of the matches did not get beyond two sets, and none of the seeded players was defeated.
Some bright play was witnessed in the afternoon, when Andrews was tested in the second round of the men's championship singles by Powdrell, who kept the younger man busy in ail departments. Powdrell captured the first set comfortably at 6-2. The Palmerston player, who was obviously off his game in the first set, pulled himself together, and took the next set, 6-4. He was leading 5-1 in the third set when Powdrell showed surprising dash, winning the next two games in'brilliant style. Andrews then found his game, and ran out comfortably at 6-3.
The game between Goodman (New South Wales) and Cowper produced some interesting play, as also did that between Young and Welsh. The young 'Varsity player got right on to his game and won the match after being one set down.
Salmond fought well to reach the third round by decisively beating Martin, and gave the spectators a -flash of his old form.
In the ladies' championship singles, Miss Napier put up a splendid fight against Miss M'Laren, runner-up in the national singles at Christchurch, although beaten 6-3, 6-2. Miss Arita Howe beat Miss V. Curtis, 6-1, 6-1, showing much better form than at Christchurch.
The New Zealand doubles champions, Mrs. Melody and Miss M'Laren, who to date have gone, through three tourneys without losing a set or even being run" to an advantage set, should reach the final of the ladies' championship doubles, but Misses MacFarlane and Payton, who have qualified for the third round by disposing of Mrs. Balfour and Miss Humphries, 6-1, 6-2, will be a hard pair to beat should they succeed in disposing of Mrs. M'Master and Miss Howe in the semi-final. Miss MacFarlane is reproducing her Christchurch form.
A particularly keen contesnfc took place between Roy Howe and T. Tatham in the third round of the boys' championship singles, the younger boy finally going down. Miss Norman Welch, in the girls' championship singles, was set a hard task against the holder, Miss Marjorie Lee, and, although. she made a splendid recovery in the second set, faded away in the last, Miss. Lee's network and volleying proving too severe for her. Miss Ina Fitilayson will meet Miss' Lee far the championship. DETAILS OF PLAY.
