RAILWAY RETIREMENTS
A.S.R.S. APPROVAL.
At the last meeting of the Thorndon branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, marked approval was expressed of v the determination of the Minister of Railways to enforce the retirement of officers who have completed forty years' service, and it was contended that such action would provide opportunities for younger men, by ensuring more rapid promotion. It was unanimously decided that representations should be made to the national executive of the society, with the object of bringing before the Minister the desirableness and necessity of abolishing the division barrier that at present exists. Members of the branch who voiced their opinions on the question expressed the view that the time was opportune for again bringing the matter under Ministerial notice, and maintained that the giving effect to the request would make for greater efficiency in the Service, as well as allow the lowest-paid member to have a chance of improving his position, without having to face the almost unsurmountable obstacles that he has at present to negotiate. It was "also claimed that the classifying of members of the Service into divisions was wholly undemocratic, and. obtained in' no other country where there was an up-to-date railway system.
