SCHOOL HOSTEL

THE MASTERTON CONTRACT.

'■ The authority of (he Minister of Education was sought yesterday by a deputation from the Wairarapa" High School Board of Governors for the erection of the hostel in connection with the school to be proceeded with. The position, as explained by members of the deputation, is that a sum of £10,----000 was some time ago raised on Education Board debentures in the Wairarapa, which has b.een retained by the Government for some months. The Alasterton Trust Lands Trust arranged to pay interest on the money for three years, provided a hostel was erected, but so far the building had not 'even been commenced. The trust has now passed ■ a resolution to the effect that it will pay no further interest on the money until the'hostel is proceeded with. The plans require the endorsement of the Education Department before the: work can be started ■ Tho Minister (the Hon. C. J. Parr) said that Cabinet gave authority in 1922 for the issue of debentures up to £10 - 000, but when the "board's revised plans were submitted the . departmental architect was not satisfied the design could be carried out for that sura. ■ Mr. Parr said he would approve of the calling of tenders immediately if the plans were approved by the Department, ft the tendered amount came within the limit he ■ had stated he would put the. matter sympathetically before Cabinet
