PRELIMINARY "WORK ACTUALLY " STARTED.

LONDON, 17th January, In the House of Commons, in reply to a question..relative, to the Singapore base, Mr. L. C. M. S. Amery, Financial Secretary to the Navy, said that the preliminary Work had begun. The .afitual ,w.ork. so..far ( ,,w,as not great,! but liabilities of about £150,000' had been incurred. The land ■ had been provided free of cost by the generosity of the colony. It was proposed to carry out the principal-works by contract. •

LONDON, 18th January. "' Speaking in the House of Commons regarding the Singapore base, Mr. L. C. V M. S. Amery explained that the preliminary work done included making the necessary - communications and the construction of water supply, as well as of residences and quarters for the workmen. The liabilities so far incurred totalled £150,000.
