MELBOURNE* 18th'January. A sensational plot to secure the escape of a long-sentence prisoner from the Melbourne gaol'has. been frustrated. -The prison authorities, through detectives, secured iuformation showing that A scheme had been elaborately prepared. Certain persons outside, as well as some other prisoners, Wore involved. Ropea and tackle were smuggled into the gaol and hidden in readily accessible places. Facilities also were made for a would-be escapee to reach the exerciseyard, scale the prison wail, and enter a waiting motor-car.. ■ _, Any warders offering resistance were to be bound or otherwise dealt with. The plot was to have eventuated on Sunday mornirig, but the authorities, forewarned^ took the necessary precautions to prevent it, and also took charge of a motor-car found waiting outside the prison, pending further inquiries. \ warder on dutyl in the sentry-box on the prison wall at the time that the. escape was to have been carried out was suspended. Three months jigo a scheme to secure the escape of the same prisoner was frustrated. .
