. V NEW YORK, 9th July. Mr. John D. Rockefeller, still probably the richest man in the world, yesterday celebrated his eighty-fourth birthday at his home, in a local suburb. Twenty-five years ago his.life was despaired of, owing ;to ill-health, but his physician to-day predicts that he will live to be 100 years old, by reason of his rigid diet and simple life. He' rises early, plays .a few holes of golf every day, wears warm clothing, and has congenial ', friends. ' ;
Mr. Rockefeller on each birthday has a band concert," but as yeslcrday was Sunday he went instead to a church which iiis funds have' built here, and distributed among the children fifteen new 5-cent 'pieces. Formerly it was his custom to deliver 10-cent pieces or bright pennies..
Mr. Rockefeller, when asked for a statement, said: "There are too many people who talk in this world. I had bettor be silent." He has distributed 500 million dollars in various philanthropic works.
