The recommendation of the Finance Committee of the .'City Council that applications should be invited for the position of City Engineer / at a salary of £1500 per . year was met, during the meeting of the council, in committee, last evening by the following amend"i >ent. proposed by Councillor Mitchell:

"That the proposal to invite applications for the position of City Engineer be postponed, mid that the question of organisation, administration, salaries, wages, and conditions obtaining in- all departments of the City Council be investigated by a sub-committee consisting of Councillors Mitchell, W- H. .Bennett H. D. Bennett, Chapman, and Luckie. such sub-committee to have power to call for persons and papers and any expert advice necessary, and to Teport to the City ■•Council." ,;' .
