FIRE AT OPOTIKI

(HI TEIBGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.! OPOTIKI,, This Day. ' A fire started in the ■' heart of the town at 3.30 this morning. The shops owned by J. C. Arthur and occupied by H. E. Battle (bootmaker), J. Steptoe (saddler),; and the building owned and occupied by H. Larmer (tobacconist) were completely destroyed. Insurances : Arthur's buildings, £ICO in the Sun office and £250 in'""the Na- , tional. Battle's stock, £100 in the National office. Steptoe's stock, £50 in the Sun office. Larmer's buildings and stock, including three billiard tables, £650. in the Sun. The occupiers are all heavy losers. The brigade was promptly on the scene, and. prevented the further spread of the fire, adjoining buildings being only slightly damaged. A large plateglass window in the shop owned by W. Oakes and occupied by 0. Shalfoon, drapers, on the opposite side of Church-street, was shattered. There is a distinct bullet hole in the remaining portion. The heat from the fire is not considered to have been sufficient to break the window. The police are investigating.
