The Dunedin Winter Meeting opened ] in splendid weatheT, and the attendance was Very large. The totalisator'handled £34,312 10s, as compared with £22,979 10s last year. The war tax amounted to £772. Other results :— Tradesmen's Handicap, of 300 soys; six furlongs.—B Mortham, 8.10 (J. Walls), 1; 3 Belair, 7.9, 2; 7 Kilmeedy, 7.0, 3. Also started—6 Kilbrogan, 9.13, 2 Buller 8.10, 4 Caverock 8.4, 11 Redshire 7.10, 5 Braid 7.8, 10 Glensponse 7.0, 9 Thistlecrown 7.0. Mortham was first out and led all the way, whining by a head ; third horse a head away. Time, lmin 17 1-Scuc Hack Steeplechase, of 200 soys;.- two
miles and a-quarter.—l Dardanelles, 10.9 (G. Fielding), 1; 2 Paremata, 11.11, 2; 3 Luigi, 10.10, 3. Also started—4 Lady Zeplina 10.0. Dardanelles caught Paremata at the water jump at the second round, and won by half a length; Luigi was 30 lengths away. Time, 4min 54 l-ssec. Jumpers' Flat Handicap, of 200 soys; one mile and a-quarter.—3 Sir Medallist, 9,0 (T. Humphries), 1; 5 Silver Shield, 9.0, 2; 2 Achilledes, 11.9, 3. Also started—4 Jeannot 11..4, 1 Hardshot 9.0. Hardshot and Jeannot were first out. Achilledes led into the straight, but Sir Medallist went to the front, winning easily by two lengths; third horse was a head away. Time, 2min 18sec. Winter Welter, of 250 soys; one mile. —7 Partisan, 8.0 (G. Young), 1; 2 Subterfuge, 8.7, 2; 3 Borodino, 8.8, 3. Also started—ll Indus 9.13, 9 Kilkee 9.11, 6 Thaddeus 9.8, 4 Claverhouse 8.12, 1 All Ready 8.11, 5 Red Admiral 8.5, 12 King of the Valley 8.2, 8 Jock 8.0, 10 Wild Pilgrim 8.0. Indus was first out, and Claverhouse was badly left. Subterfuge led from Partisan into the straight,, but the latter finished strongly, winning by a long neck; Borodino was a nose away.
