TRAGIC AFFAIR ON THE PAKEHA.
The otherwise pleasant voyage of the transport Pakeha, which arrived at Wei-, lington yesterday, was marred by one incident—the death of Regimental Ser-geant-Major Samuel Stanley .Choate under unfortunate circle-stances. From an account given to a Post reporter this morning it appears that the sergeantmajor and a sergeant commenced an argument on the main deck on Tuesday last; During the altercation the sergeantmajor called the sergeant a liar, and the latter, resenting the statement, struck him. A fight ensued, and during this the sergeant-major foil -on to the deck, his head striking an iron winch near one /of,the ship's holds. Seeing that his opponent was badly injured, the sergeant at once summoned a doctow SergeantM.ijor Choate succumbed, to his injuries at 1 p.m. on Wednesday last. The'sergeant, whoso name is not disclosed, was placed under arrest, and a Court of Inquiry took evidence on board the Pakeha. As the offence is a military one, it is understood that the sergeant, who is still under arrest, will be dealt with by the military authorities.
