NATURE OF THE EQUIPMENT.

NEW Y.ORK, 17th May (delayed). The New York Times correspondent at Trepassey Bay, Newfoundland, states that the' United States seaplanes which started in the trans-Atlantic flight were each equipped with four Liberty 12----cylinder motors, developing 1600 horsepower. Each machine- carried 1700 gallons of petrol, and was able to develop 90 miles an hour. They carried six men each, and measured 126 feet along the greatest length of th© planes. Although not the largest machines in the world, they were considered to" be , the- most powerful. The weight of petrol on each machine was: 10,0001b, and they also carried 9001b of lubricating oil. Wireless instruments, with a range of 500 miles, were provided to enable the aviators to keep in constant touch with the United States warships which patrolled the Atlantic from Trepassey to the Azores at intervals of fifty miles. . The United Press correspondent says that twenty-one American destroyers patrolled the route of the flight. Tha destroyer Melville wirelessed that N. 0.4 was fifty miles from Horta, in tha Azores, at 8.10 a.m., Washington fcims, and landed at Horta at 9.30 a.m. During tho whole flight, and at intervals; of less than an hour, the patrolling destroyers received, wireless messages from the seaplanes. These messages were transmitted, to "Washington, where large assemblages of officials- awaited them eagerly. The seaplanes were making a speed of ninety-five miles an hour during the fu-st eight hoars of -the journey. N.C.4 developed engine trouble on the first leg of the journey from Rockaw_ay .to Halifax, and required heavy repairs At ,-Trepassey before starting for the Azores,
