ESTIMATE OF FRENCH DAMAGE. (deceived May 31, 8.30 a,m,) : PARIS, 18th May, It is authoritatively estimated that tho
material, damage in the French devastated areas amounts to 800 millions sterling for agricultural depreciation, 850 millions for damaged _ and destroyed buildings, and 400 millions for loss of furniture.
Many villages cannot be rebuilt owing to changes in the subsoil and tho presence of explosives and soldiers' bodies. Fifty thousand acres of arable land "can never again be worked. . The depreciation due to trench-making is set down at 53 millions, and the depreciation in the back areas due to the overgrowth of weeds and grass at SO millions.
