OCCUPATION OF SMYRNA

ROME PRESS AGITATED

(Received May 31, 9.a.m.)

I ROME, 18th May (delayed). ! Considerable newspaper agitation has followed the news that a Greek division was authorised to occupy Smyrna. It is pointed out that two-thirds of the trade of Trieste was with Smyrna. Italy's claims to Smyrna are apparently unrecognised. Although the newspapers advise calmness, they forcibly protest against Italy's claims before the Paris Conference being sacrificed to the profit either of the Jugo-Slavs or of the Greeks.
