BAG-SNATCHING ON A TRAM
At the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, 9. M., Kenneth Green, a young man, was charged with having, on sth February, stolen a handbag and contents, of the total value of £12 8s 7d, the property of Ellen Sunderland. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for the defence. According to the evidence of .the compainant, she was a oassenger o& a Brooklyn tramcar on the night of the sth.inst., and accused, when leaving the car., snatched her bag, the strap of which gave way. She notified ,the conductor of the theft, and accused Was taken into custody. , She had never seen accused before. Evidence was given by Dug&ld Bramley, tram conductor, who stated that he saw accused fall from .the car, with a handbag in his i.x)sseßßion, and make off. Witness followed, and, with others, caught accused, who was handed over to the police. James Henry Meehan^ a passenger on the car, deposed to seeing accused take the bag. Constable Melville gave evidence as to arresting accused, who tdmitted the* charge. Accused pleaded guilty arid was remanded to the Supreme Court for' sentence.
