Pinder, M.A. ' iAn inspection of the site of the proposed suspension bridge over the gulf to connect WadeatoWn and Ngaio was made yesterday by the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. M'Laren), the City Engineer (Mr. Morton), the City Valuer (Mr. Ames), and the OnsloW Borough Engineer (Mr. R. S. Rounthwaite). The principal object of the visit was to enable the city authorities to decide the question of acquiring some of Mrs. yon Haast's land, on the Wadestown side, to give an approach, to the proposed bridge. An election of officers' for the New Zealand branch of the Federated Seamen's Union of Australia is in progress throughout New Zealand. The results will not be made known until all the branches have held their meetings (WelJington's was held last evening).. Successful candidates for office are elected by a combined vote of all the members of the Seamen's Union in New Zealand. Mr. W. T. Young, secretary of the Wellington branch, was, however, re-elected unopposed. A compound fracture of the right leg was sustained at Brooklyn yesterday by James Alfred Christian, aged nine years. He was running from the rear on a moving traction engine an<l came into collision with a passing express, witlf the result that his leg was badly broken. Sir Robert Stout returned from Lyttelton this jnorning and left by the Napier express for Palmerston North, where the usual circuit sittings opened this afternoon. He and other members of the Prison Board left Wellington on Monday evening last week. They reached Invercargill on Tuesday everting at 9.60. The Prison Board met at Invercargill prison on Wednesday ajnd finished their sitting there at 6.15 p.m. In the evening some of the visitors attended the prison to see the classes for instruction of prisoners, and next morning visited the reclamation and other works being done by prison lab*our. They left Invercargill late on Thursday, reaching Dunedin in the evening. A meeting of the Prison Board was held on the sftme evening from Bto 10 o'clock. Next morning the board met at 9 in the Dunedin prison and continued sitting for an hour. The members then left by' the second express for Christchurch. The board left for Hanmer next morning, and reached there at 3.10 p.m., and from 4 o'clock to 6.15 held a meeting at the Prison Camp. On Monday the board met at 7 a.m. and sat for about an hour, and at 10.30 Sir Robert Stout and Mr. Kyall left for Christchurch by motor, reaching there at 2.20 p.m. They then left for Lyttelton at 2.45 p.m., met prisoners in gaol from 3.30 to 4.30, and left by steamer at 6.15 p.m. for Wellington. A. branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia, Limited, has been opened at Auckland. The bank, which has 234 branches and receiving offices throughout Australia and Tasmania, recently _ extended its operations in the Dominion, with headquarters at Wellington. To-morrow evening a conversazione in connection with the United Methodist Conference will be held in the Town Hall. Rev. Principal Garland will be the speaker, and a musical and elocutionary programme has been arranged. Messrs. E. Johnston and Co. will hold an auction sale of household furnishings in their rooms to-morrow, at 1.30 o'clock. On. Friday, at 2 o'clock sharp, at the residence, "Fornsido, ' Main-road, Wadestown, they will hold a sale of furniture, including upright grand piano and effects, on account of Mr. H. S.
