In the House of Lords, Lord Middleton drew attention to the decline in tho number of tho Territorials. Lord Herschell replied that tho Government had requested tho committee on dofe/ico to reconsider the matter of the safety of tho country in the event of on expeditionary force going abroad, and in visw of new military factors since Mi. Asquith's statement on 29th July, ISO£ The Government was oppoced to compulsory service, but it might bo desirable to go in for compulsory physical training in connection with continuation Bchoola. It might bo that the me of arms and sintplo military formations would add to tbo sett-respect of boys and lay the foundations on which a great scheme of national defence would be based if unforeseen dangers menaced tbe country.
