FAREWELL TO REV. J. J. NORTH
Amongst the passengers- for Lyttelton by the M»oii last night were tho Rev. J. J. North, who has accepted a call to Christchurch and Mrs. North and family. A very large number of church members and friends were on the wharf to say goodbye. Three cheers were given, and a parting hymn was sung. At the Vivian-street Baptist Church on Sunday last Mr. "North conducted his final services" before leaving for Christchurch. In tlie morning Mr. North based his remarks on I'hilippians 1 and 27 — "Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ ; that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that yet stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel." At the Sunday School Mr. North addressed the scholars, and also spoke to the young men and young women in their new classrooms, which were occupied for the first time. The church was crowded at the evening service, and extra chairs had to be provided to accommodate the people. . The sermon text was John 1 and 37— "And the two disciples heard him speak, and they ioh lowed Jesuß." The preacher appealed to his hearers to enlist in the service of JeßUs Christ, this being the chief object of the Christian ministry
