FREE PASSES FOR RIFLEMEN

The executive of the New Zealand Rifle Club's Association "has issued, a circular to the' clubs stating that as* a. result of the conference between the Acting-Commandant of the Forces (Colonel Heard) and the chairman of the New Zealand Rifle Club's Executive (President" H. Marshall, Karori' Rifle Club)> held at the request of the Minister of Defence (Hon. James Allen), the question of free railway paseßes for rifle meetings was brought to a very satisfactory issue. The conditions as then agreed up>n and' since advised by "Headquarters," are as follow :— -(1) When free passes are granted up to 100 miles for the purpose of taking part in approved rifle meetings— (a) Territorials, Riflemen, and Senior Cadets shall be included in the grant of this privilege; (b) The passes may be given up to a distance of 100 miles, 'the man paying the balance of the cost of the 'journey over 100 miles. *■ (2) The sum allotted in the Estimates (£1500)' for -the payment (4 free railway pa"sses up to 100 miles' as in (1), will be distributed frmqpg the four districts, in proportfon' to the number of Territorials, Gazetted Rifle Clubsj and Senior Cadets in each district. (3) Before, any free railway passes, as in (1), are issued by the 0.0. district, he will satisfy, himself that the meeting for. which .. such fosses are required is of such a nature that rifle shooting thereat has >a definite military value. (4) The O.C. district will only issue passes to the secretary of the Rifle Association, vvh.o is the only person authorised to indent for them on the O.C. district. Clause 3 means that the programme must conform to the conditions laid down by the Dominion Rifle Association for the current year, At the request of President Marshall, the Act-ing-Commandant promised that the figures, paper, and patches for the uniform figure targets would be issued free of charge. These are on order from England, and should' be available before long. The figures are actually obtainable now.
