Albert Knight, vicar of Christ Church, Hunslet, were carefully planned from the time he dramatically, disappeared from the cliff edge in a blaze of flashlight with which ha pretended to take a photograph, until he waa joined by Miss Fanny Grimes aboard the Ballarat Knight's hair was cut unusually short the day before he disappeared. His marked attention to Miss Grimes caused gossip; dividing the congregation into two groups, one defending the vicar and the other full of misgivings. The gossip was silenced upon Misa Grimes quitting Leeds in September for Southerndown, but was renewed again in the autumn, the congregation demurring at Knight's six weeks' vacation which he took despite hia wife's objection. An impressive memorial service was held at Hunslet when ii was supposed that Knight was dead, and the Bishop of Leeds eulogised the deceased. The missing vicar three times attempt* ed to murder his wife by means of poison, strangling, and drowning. • Miss Gnmes participated in Knight's crusade against the White Slave traffic, in which work Mies Grimes'a position in a clothing factory was useful. Knight, under the name of King, had stayed at a farm in Sussex since October, learning poultry farming, prior to emigrating,, and Miss Grimes, posing as his wife, accompanied him. Knight was absent at week-ends, and for three weeks at Christmas, and after his disappearance he returned to Sussex and took Miss Grimes on board the Bal* larat. "ASSISTED" PASSENGERS. The Evening News states that Rr/ight and Grimes are on board the steamer Port Lincoln, and that they obtained assisted passages from the Victorian Government". Knight has in his posses* sion £376. Miss Suffield, Grimes's girl friend, alleges that slip was aware of the scheme for Knight's disappearance. Knight declared that his married life was miserable. Grimes wrote to Miss Suffield stating that she and Knight were going to Australia.
