(B* TEtEOBA*tf~- St'BClAt. 10 THE POST.) HAWERA, sth February. Many noticeable improvements have been carried out at Hawera since the spring. A commodious tea kiosk has been Duilt at the back of the ste Wards' r sttfnd, which has itself been much enlarged. A new totalieatov house similar in shape to that at Wanganui has been erected, and a new number board on which the order of the draw ior poaitions at the post is plainly displayed is situated facing the stands in the inside of the training tracks. The dub's property has thus been brought right up to date. Enticed from home, by the prospects of excellent sport, to be seen under delight-ful-climatic conditions, local residents turned oat in strong force, and, as the morning trains from both Wanganui and New Plymouth were well patronised, the attendance Quickly, drew -to record proportions. 1 The racing* wan |of an interesting nature, and in winning the Cup in 2irin 35 2-Ssec Undecided established a record, the previous time for this event having been put up by Milan, who got home in 2min 36sec in 1910. ,A. Oliver has ridden the winne>- three liuies in the last four years, namely on Milan, i Bronze, and, Undecided. F. G. Ross j lodged a complaint with the stewards, alleging that he had been engaged to ride Ngatiruarrlri in the Hurdled, and claiming payment of a winning mo-.int. The owner of the horse (Mr. D. Hughe3) denied that he had engaged Ros3, and as the latter could produce no documentary evidence in support of his statement the stewards decided to take no action. They recommended, however, that in future all jockeys should be cafeful to get their engagements in writing as provided for in the Rules of Racing. An accident which might have been attended with most serious consequences occurred in the Meremere Hack Race in which three horses fell. Tree Lucerne was the first to come down and fortunately his rider (O'Shea) escaped with a severe shaking. The horse came in with his mouth and one hock bleeding, and his near eye bunged up. 'G. M 'Donald, who rode Lady Gordon, received a nasty cut in the head, and was also much shaken, though no bones were broken. Dr. 'Paget, who rode Lucerne, suffered a broken collar bone. BOURIKOFF'S EASY WIN. For fully half an hour prior to the opening event Bobrikoif was the centre of attraction. He had done very little ■work since hia arrival in Hawera, one trip over six furlongs at three-quarter pace, and some trotting and cantering, having been all that Davis had asked of him, and he was certainly half a hundredweight heavier than when seen out at Trentham. This with hie pottery action, though cei'tainly no worse than usual, as he did his preliminary was enough to dissuade many people who had not seen him before from supporting him, the consequence being that he ieturned a falsely good' dividend. Masterpiede showed no dash as he went down. Lady Mensshikoff looked bright but backward, and Mendip is very affected in the wind. Still it was good lo see at least three owners show the proper sjjorting spirit, and send something oufc to tackle the champion. Tho face was run to suit Bobrikoif to a nicety. A middling pace was set over the first Mires furlongs, the result being thai, the crack Was always amongst hia opponent:-. Going down the back he was pulling double, and Jones slackened him out". The pace then became sound, and although Masterpiece tried to go with hhu Bobrikoff was in front half a mile iron) home and there he Btayed, winning as he liked by three length?. Mendip vms half a length away third. Private watch-holders made tho time 4-ssec slower than the official timekeeper. ' THE HURDLES. The Whareroa Hurdles resolved into a match between Aviatrix and Sandy Paul, the latter of whom, capitally ridden by Julian, "outstayed his opponent, and won, by three lengths. Marion was eight or ten lengths away. Ngatiruanui was the popular selection for the Ohura Hack Hurdles, and the alleged good thing duly came off. Ho gave a lot of, trouble at the post, backing down and upsetting .the line timfc and again, but Mr. O'Connor eventually made , a good- start. -Princess Flo led for nearly half a mile, when the favourite took charge, and that was the end of it. Serenity, was badly 1 placed during the early stages, but he ran up second round the back, and but for making a faulty jump at the last hurdle, he would probably have beaten Allure. Clemency was fourth. si. field of tweuty lined up for the

Meremere Hack Race, and the first to get going were Jack Pin, Handsome, and Sylvia May. After travelling two furlongs Tree Lucerne, who was lying sixth, fell, bringing down Lady Gordon, who in turn brought down Lucerne. Just at this stage Grattan began to move up, and, getting a lucky passage on the rails, scored by a neck from Park Tide, who finished fast. Lady Fran was a similar distance away third. UNDECIDED'S CUP. Lady Menschikoff was the only withdrawal from the Cup ? for which Labour Day, who looked an improved mare, wasmade favourite. She had anything but a good passage, and in the circumstances did well to finish fourth. Nothing, however, had a chance with Un- ] decided, who was always well placed on the rails, and won Very easily by a clear length. Brown Owl jumped away well, but Emerson immediately steadied her and she fell back amongst the ruck, at the tail end of which was Master Tupuhi Cheddar appeared to go fairly well for about seven furlongs, when he joined the tail end division, from which Master. Laddo never succeeded in extracting himself. Kina found the journey too far, but finished fifth, followed by Brown Trout and Patriotic, whilst. IVlanawakaha was last. Con the Shaughraun was a rank outsider and returned a double figure dividend. OTHER EVENTS. The Ladies' Bracelet went to Eoyal Patron, who came at the right end and won comfortably by three parts of a length. Styrax gave trouble at the barrier, and when the tapes rose he jumped back, fell on his knees and dislodged his rider. . Goldsize was favourite for the Flying Handicap, but he, was very sore and was never dangerous. Peroneal, Lady*7olga, and Sanguinary were the first to get going, whilst Dearest got chopped out and fell back last. Turning for home Sanguinary held a slight advantage over Peroneal, .whilst Katua showed, up prominently 'on the outside, and ' Dearest was attempting to get through 'on the rails. A great finish ' resulted in Sangoinary's favour by a head, Peroneal being a neck away third, a' head in front of Dearest, who had all the worst of the luck. The concluding event turned out to be the best of good things for Plnoso who led throughout and scored easily by three lengths. Postillion failed to stay on and was beaten by half a head for second honours. N.Z. METROPOLITAN T.C. MEETING THE ACCEPTANCES. (BY TELEOBAPH— X J BESS ASSOCIATION.) CHBISTCHUECH, sth Feb.
