A claim of an unusual nature came before Mr. L. G. Eeid, S.M., at the Masterton Court recently. The plaintiff. Tawhaio Te Tau, sued, as chairman of the Rongokokako Maori Council, to recbver £6 from Kahu Pirip, being the amount of fines imposed by the Konunui Village Committee for breaches of the Maori Council's bylaws. After the plaintiff's evidence had been taken, Mr. Robinson, who appeared for the defendant, raised the point that tho Maori Council had neglected to definitely define the limits of the Kohunui Pa and have same approved by the Governor, and that therefore there was no offence possible in the Kohunui Pa. This contention was upheld by the Magistrate, who nonsuited the plaintiff without costs. An order has been issued by Captain and Adjutant H. M. W. Richardson, of the sth Regiment, that an advance party consisting of a non-commissioned officer and ten men from each company of the regiment, under Captain R,. W. Wilkinson, is to go out to Trentham by the 9 a.m. train on Friday, 14th February, to pitch tents for the regimental camp, which is to be begin there on the evening of that day. The cami.- will last seven days. Captain Richardson points out in his orders that section 59, part VIL, of the Defence Act, 1909, prohibits the taking of liquor into camp. An appeal in a case of long standing was heard before His Honour Mr. Justice Chapman at the Supreme Court today. Win. Oeo. Emeny, builder, of Wellington, was the appellant, and Harry Wilson Davies, plumber, was the respondent. In the Magistrate^ Court some years ago Davies sued Emeny for '£120, allegedly duo for work done. Dr. M'Arthur gave judgment , for plaintiff, and defendant thereupon appealed to the Supreme Court. Mr. Justice Chapman gave an interim judgment, but before delivering his final decision, he required further evidence concerning the custom in the trade in regard to tenders. This evidence was given this morning. Mr. A. W. Blair artel Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared for the appellant, and Mr. A. Gray, K.C. with him Mr. D. R. Haggard for the respondent. His Honour reserved decision. The committee of the Wellington Centre of the St. John Ambulance Association met yesterday. A letter was read from the St. ' John Ambulance Brigade urging that it should have a representative on the committee of the association. The. chairman (Mr. C. P. IPowles) said that the matter was entiicly one for the attention of the association, which elected the committe" at the annual meeting. If a member representing the brigade were proposed piobably hp would be elected, so long as the limit of fifteen members was not exceeded.
