TO FIT THE DEED.

'XO THE EDITOK. Sir, — I was hoping to see, as file phrase goes, "some abler pen than mine" give iorth the suggestion which I now make apropos of tho singularly courageous aot of, Mr. Claude in recontly avorting a collision of trains' on the Main Trunk line, and thereby undoubtedly saving many lives, preventing much human suffering, and preserving valuable public property. The lato King Edward VII. founded a speoial medal as reward for just such heroic- service to one's follow man, or to tho State, as that performed by Mr. Claude — a decoration which it is a signal honour to receive. Only a few weeks ago King Ceorge conferred this modal on a number of worthy persons, among whom may bo mentioned the sergeant of police wounded in the Houndsditch affair; the woman who bravely assisted a policeconstable to arrest an armed man who was tiring on tho constable at the time; and (hero is a case very much in point) on a police, or Territorial, sergeant who, at considerable personal risk, transferred himself from his bicycle to a vehicle, the horses to which had boli,ed in a crowded thoroughfare, thon climbed along th 9 shafts, secured tho reins, and brought tho runaways to a standstill, by so doing averting a terrible catastrophe. Mr. Claude's brave deed was remarkable for just tho samo high qualities — presenco of mind, resource, coolness, daring, promptitude, and readiness to sacrifioo self for others. Such heroism would be fitly recognised by tho Government, through Lord Islipgton, recommending Mr. Claude as a worthy recipient of tho "Hero's" modal, as it is designated. 1 trust this may be dono, and that Mr. Claudo's example may stimulate other New Zoalandors to like deeds of courage and unselfishness should opportunity occur.— Xl am, etc., H. B. BRIDGE. Wellington, 22nd April, 1911.
