DR. CAMERON'S PLATFORM FOR CITY COUNCIL. INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE. I. REDUCTION OF COST OF LIVING. — High cost of living is one of the main causes crippling our industrinl manufactories, and also of racial suicide and racial degeneration. 1. Co-operation with Government to Erevent Trusts or Monopoliess e.g., and. Timber, Brick, Pipe, Oil, Flour, Meat, and other Trusts forcing up the price of living. 2. Establishment of Municipal Markets, bring producer and consumer into direct dealing, and thereby saving middle-man's profite and charges. I will firmly oppose the present market site being used for this purpos6, it being too expensive and absolutely unsuitable. 3. Encouragement of Local Industries and Manufacturers. 4. Competent business-like management of all affairs under municipal control—property, trams, etc. 5. Representatives of tho Council on the Hospitals and Harbour Boards Bhould see that these bodies carry out their duties in a competent and business-like manner. 6. City Council Representatives in Parliament should give careful consideration to all Customs duties on the necessaries of life. 7. Prevention of undue taxation. 8. Sound finance and no borrowing on short-dated debentures, and avoidanoe of City Council "dabbling" in matters that it knows little about. 9. Avoidance of "bungling" such as has gone on in the past. 11. LABOUR QUESTION.— "Fair play to man and mastor." Avoidance of class hatred and sectarian strife, for such can only lead to-the "tying up" of capital, strikes, and slumps. Encourage industrious and competent men to stay in the service of the Council by a proper system of promotion, payment, and superannuation. Day labour where possible in place of contracts. 111. SANITATION.— EarIy extension of Drainage to outlying districts— Maranui, Northlands, Vogeltown, Wadestown, etc •, Enforcement of necessary sanitary improvements in slum areas, etc., but not by unduly oppressive means to any owners who may be weak financially. Co-opera-tion between the Counoil and Government for providing better Playgrounds for our school children. iy. TRAMWAYS.— Efficient Management. Fares as cheap as possible consistent- with a sufficient amount being set aside for depreciation, repairs, etc. Indecent overcrowding to bo prevented. More care to be taken to avoid accidents and subsequent municipal liability. Extensions and straightening of lines to be gone on with, provided consistent with sound finance. Belter Shelter Yards. V. STREETS, ROADS, ETC.— Wood Blocking to be gone .on with. Bettor class of metal to be used on road. Hotter lighting and naming of streots iii outlying districts. Clearance of streots of "undenirables." VI. MILK SUPPLY to bo improved. I will endeavour to obtain a reliable supply for infants, invalids, etc. VII. ELECTRIC LIGHT AND POWER, to be supplied as cheap as possible. VIII. TOWN PLANNING to receive careful consideration, and I therefore advocate the formation of more Ratepayers' and kindred associations, so that each district may make a oaretul study of its requirements. Formation of ''Trades Area." Prevention of depreciation ot locality by unsightly or undesirable buildings being put there. IX. All rneetinga on pu£>lic business, except whore mattors of a strictly personal nature are to bo discussed, to bo open to the Press. , X. — I maintain that the Government should contribute its share for the upkeep of the Fire Brigade. XI.— I am _ strongly opposed to overmunicipalisation and too much interference (even by the Government) with the liberties of the citizens. I will oppose Municipal Theatres, Bakeries, eto. XII. — I am opposed to the Council taking over the Gas Company. Gas and electricity will, bo cheaper and better managed if Icept competing. XIII. — I am absolutely opposed to the City Counoil doing its own lire and other insurancing, and starting in opposition to the State and existing companies. XIV. — I consider that at present there is no necessity for a Municipal Labour Agency, but that vacancies should be notified to Trades Hall, State Bureau, • etc. ' XV. — I will insist on a reasonable amount of City Reserves being maintained or acquired for the future requirements of the city. .^-"VI.— I am opposed to the City Council's past policy of putting up a statue one day/ then pulling it down "the next," and similar XVIL— GENERAL WORKS to recoivo consideration as soon as finances will allow. Construction of Hot Sea Baths, Traffic Tunnel to south-eastern districts. Refreshment Kiosks to be built at Botannioal Gardens and Newtown Park, and leased yearly. I will endeavour to make Wellington a more popular residential city and holiday resort. Public Tennis and Golf Course should be formed, to give suitable recieation for women, etc., and _to aid tho medical profession in treating consumption in Wellington, instead of having to send oases away from home. XVIII.— As I pay about £1 per week in rates and taxes; the oitizens oan rest assured that I know what rates and taxes are. As my professional duties take mo almost daily into almost every part of the city and its suburbs, I know well the state of the roads and the requirements of each distnot. If elected it will be my aim to promote jfche best interests of the citizens as a whole. I represent no particidar class, but consider that the needs of each section of tho community should receive fair and broad-minded consideration. The important publio utilities now being carriod on should bo kept as freo as possible from the influence of party politics or class interest, and should be managed with the one object of rendering the greatest possible services to the public, consist ent with the maintenance of a Bound finance. If elected I shall support a continuance of the progressive and prudent policy that has been followed during the past few years. I think the following are matters that should be effectively dealt with in the near future : — The Extension of Constable-street Tramway. The Acquirement of additional Recreation Areas and definite schemes for tho improvement of the Town Belt and Lyall Bay Reserve. Rearrangement ot the Zoo management and control. The establishment of a Milk Depot, as already approved by the Council. The establishment of a Municipal Market on an experimental ucale that will be capable of expansion as required.
