STORM APPROACHING. HEAVY RAIN PROBABLE.

Indications speak v strongly of a stormy visitant very shortly. Yesterday the Government Meteorologist spoke of a falling barometer and likely rain prospects, and to-day he is in a position to predict probable heavy rain and stormy weather northward of Kaikoura and Farewell Spit. The barometer is on the down grade everywhere, and easterly winds, strong to gale, are expected in the North Island. Heavy seas are reported northward of East Cape, and it is anticipated that they will increase northward of Kaikoura after from ten to sixteen hours. Special warnings were sent out to all the little stations in the North Island, advising that heavy weather may be expected, with flooded, rivers on the East Coast and easterly gales. Rough water is probable in Cook Strait and offshore on all the Western Coast. For the last twenty-four hours preceding 9 a.m. to-day barometrical pressure has decreased everywhere except in the extreme South. It is very low at Cape Maria Van Diemen. \ A cyclonic area appeared to be enveloping the North Island, and easterly and northerly winds have increased generally, strong to gale in the Northern districts. Much rain is expected northward of Cape Egmont and Napier, and unsettled and cloudy weather has extended as far south as Hokitika and Lyttelton.
