FOOTBALL. EX-COLLEGIANS' MATCH.

DEVENISH SHIELD CONTEST. The final game in the Dovenish Shield competition was played at the Athletic Park yesterday between Wellington College Old Boys and Christchurch High School Old Boys. Wellington faced the wind in the first half, and they had an anxious time defending. Christchurch maintained a hot attack, but some time elapsed before their hard work was rewarded. A fine passing rush amongst the visiting backs just failed to materialise, Guthrie being pulled down near the line, but persistence was rewarded shortly afterwards, when ChristchuTch were given a free kick for a Wellington infringement^ and J. Bain sent the ball over tho bar. Wellington made valiant efforts from the kick-out, and it was noticeable that Grace at full-back was about the most useful man in the field, his line-kicking being excellent. The forwards livened up, and engineered several determined passing rushes, and soon had play right on their opponents' line. Wellington's first score came from a penalty kick by Drake. (3 — 3.) Christchurch were now minus | the services of Boag, who injured his head just prior to the goal being kicked. Another dotermined onslaught by the Wellington forwards ended up in Jacobson scoring between the posts, and Drake converted. (S— 3.) There is nothing like a try to put "ginger" into an opposing and losing fifteen. Christchurch rallied, had shifted play to the other end of the field in a very brief period, and a short, sharp dash gave Parsons a chance to score. He made no mistake, but the attempt to improve the score was unavailing. (6 — 8.) In the second half Wollington scored early, Grace getting over near the corner. No goaL (11—6.) The local team were on top in most of the succeeding play, and before the game ended managed to add another 3 points to their total, Dawson scoring. The game ended : Wellington, 14; Christchurch, 6. Mr. T. H. Jones was referee.
