Hart j £1, "Sorry this is not more" 2s 6d, Miss Ellis 2s 6d, 0.W.8. £10, J.M.E. £1, a Wellington butcher £1; total, £13 ss; previously acknowledged, £29 2s 6d ; total, £42 7s 6d. Tlae Chinese Consul (Mr. Hwang) is- not receiving donations any longer for the famine fund, but Captain Blackburne learns that the famine conditions are increasing in North Kiang-su. He therefore will be pleased to receive donations towards the famine fund, which will be forwarded through the China Inland Mission, and duly acknowledged. In a letter which Captain Blackburne received this week from Miss A. Henry, of the China Inland Mission, Yang-Chow, Cetitral Kiang-su, that lady writes .— " My heart weeps and weeps for the sorrows of the people, most fearful distress on every hand. I met a dear woman standing at a corner and weeping bitterly. 1 enquired the reason, and found that two of her children had just died, and the other three with her husband, who is dangerously ill, with herself, were just starving. Sixteen people were trampled to death the other day in the .attempt to get a little rice gruel, which is given to the poor during the worst two months of the year. Would that you could see the huts I passed through this morning, families huddled together in the tiny straw hut like animals, and in many of them there is sickness too. What can be done? May I the Lord have jnercy upon those who have, and yet refrain from giving to the fatarving ones." Miss A. Henry will be remembered by those who heard her I apeak in many places in New Zealand j last year. Captain Blackburne is local ! lion. secretary for the China Inland -i Mission. j
