Dated this Bth day of April, lEII. ALEX. WEBSTER, Returning Officer, Wellington Harbour Board. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CITYi OF WELLINGTON. ELECTION NOTICE. T ADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— ■S-i I am offering myself for election to the City Council of Wellington, and. as 1 do not belong to tiny. League, I/have * free hand and am not bound to any party. My intention is, if elected, to see that justice is done to all members of th»i community. I am a strong believer in employ ees getting a fair living wage. I have employed lpbour in this city for thirty-fivo years, 'and atiy oho who has been in my employ will bear me out in stating that I have always paid wages sufficient to eftable them to live comfortably. At the late conference between the City Council and the labourers in its employ, it was decided to refer the question or wages to the Arbitration Court, because, an agreement could not be come to at the conference. I think this matter snould have been settled amicably between all parties. Tho Corporation should arrive at some conclusion as to what a living wage is, and then see t.hat that is th minimum paid ro its employees. I contend that the beet- and most economical policy is to pay good wages so long aa you get a good return in the shape of honest work. This is the ess.ence of economy, but it does not entail a reduction ot w ages The overcrowding of the tramcars is a thing that the now Council should soo to immediately. A city like this can well attord to have extra cars and to run a hve minutes service in the busy limes of the day, and now tho winter is cor.iiuo- on, and people to be crowded together in wot clothes, which is injurious to tho public health, this should be eeen to ab once. If elected, the first thing I would do would, be to use all my power to rectity this overcrowding of cars. I , am , nofc a Politician, and tdo nofc think that one need be a politician to 2U2 U jy r for tho Coun cil. On the other hand I am a man with sound business knowledge and experience, and these ara the essential qualifications for Councillorship where co many large undertakings have to ba managed on busmeis prinoiples. lYours faithfully, (50SEPH MANDBL,
