THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
TO THE EDITOK. Sir, — Lately you have published a few letters on tho half-holiday question, and an none of these can I Eeo any authentic reason for tho change except pleasure. I would be pleased if one of the advocates for Saturday could tell mo definitely if this change will increase the present cost of living. During the last ten years or so the various workers have had many inI creases in wages, but the cost of living J goes up proportionately with each rise, so I that at tho present moment tho cost is out of all roasori. Last week I saw where a i deputation had gone to the- City Council asking for an increase of wages, and tha published testimony of two men showed that it took them all their time to exist upon their earnings. Why? Eight shil- | lings a day used to be good money, but to-day it is poor money, and at the rate that tho coat of living is increasing workers will continually be in the same condition no matter what their earning money ia. I don't think anybody can deny the fact that living in New Zealand is going up beyond the odds, and" if this new reform will have the same effect, I for one will votd to leave matters as they are. Up to the present I cannot see the advantage of any of our Labour reforms; for they no doubt better some to tho harm of the rest, and the weekly departure of the Sydney boat only goes to prove my statement. The Evening Post has always beon a freo paper to the public, so I hope I will see somo argument other than that of pleasure, so that tho public can get a guide as to how to vote.— l am, etc., ' WORKER.
