The Hon. T. Mackenzie and the Hon D. Buddo left for the South last night. The Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P.) ■will spend the Easter holidays at Picton and tlie Sounds. Mr. Justice Cooper left this afternoon for Hamilton, where ho will spend the Easter vacation. Mr. Murdoch M'Lean, of the known firm of contractors, has been appointed a Justice of the Peace. Mr. D. A. Aiken, assistant-general manager of tho Union Steam Ship Conu pany, is on a visit to Wellington. Mr. R. Angus, New Zealand manage* for Messrs. Thomas Cook and Sons, arrived here from Auckland yesterday. Messrs. L. Sievers and C. Wood were last night presented with tokens of es-> •teem by the office and maintenance staffs of the Wellington Gas Company. Mr. E. S. Forno, of the clerical staff of the Wellington Customhouse, who haa been transferred to Napier, was farewelled last night by hie confreres and presented with a token of esteem. Mr. Robert Pox, drainage oversear for the Dunedin Drainage Board, has been appointed by the Johnsonville Town Boa«i 'x> supervise tho caarrying out of the Johnsonville water supply and drainage system. Breen, Chetwin, and Ha/niei will represent the Ota-go Trades Council. Mr. W. C. Churchill, Past High Chief Ruler in the Rechabite Order, accompanied by Bro. W. J. Gaudm, District Chief Ruler of the New Zealand Centra! District, visited New Plymouth y ester* day, and was entertained by the local Tent and representatives of various, kindred societies. In the evening h» delivered an address on the work of the Order to a fair attendance. Mr. A. R. Atkinson announces his intention of contesting the Wellington; East seat at the next general election. At the last election Mr. Atkinson headed' ■tie poll at the first ballot with 2412 votes, Mr. M'Laren being second wit!h 1746. At the second ballot Mr. M'Laren polled 3446 and Mr. Atkinson 3019 votes. Dr. Newman has decided to contest th« same seat in the Opposition interest. The Rev. J. G. Chapman, who arrived: in the city yesterday, and on Sunday, commences his ministry at Tanmakistreet, is not altogether unknown in Wellington. He was stationed at Thorndon some years ago. His recent appointments have been Wanganui and New Plymouth, where he has been veiy successful. In the latter circuit he has preached to very, large congregations at the Whitelej; Memorial Church.
